Active Communities

About Active Communities

We invest in local communities to help create fairer places to grow, live, work and age. We believe that where you live should not unfairly reduce the length of your life or the quality of your health.

Ideas we can fund

We want great ideas which make neighbourhoods even better. Projects need to:

  • be for funding of between £5,000 and £25,000 a year
  • last for between 9 months and 2 years
  • be small and local, for example, a few streets or a small village. We don’t give money to larger projects
  • be designed and led by local people
  • create stronger connections between people
  • be in one or more of our fundable neighbourhoods
  • enable people to feel they are doing something positive in their area, making a difference and feeling good about it

Here are some ideas we have funded:

  • a mediation service run by tenants on a housing estate
  • a women’s volunteering group run by and for Bengali women
  • computer skills support group run for and by  older people
  • support for local people to become community organisers
  • setting up a green space in urban areas

What we don’t fund

We don’t fund projects that are strictly health-related and focus on certain diseases (e.g. cancer, diabetes, stroke), or which aim to change behaviour (e.g. giving up smoking, losing weight etc.).

We also don’t fund:

  • projects from individuals or that benefit an individual
  • projects where other organisations take over the management
  • profit making organisations which includes all Limited Liability Partnerships and Companies Limited by Shares.
  • tax-funded projects, e.g. through the NHS or in school time
  • political or religious projects
  • activities already funded by another organisation
  • projects that are part of a bigger project, our minimum contribution must be 50%
  • things that have already happened
  • loan repayments
  • capital items only (e.g. equipment), you must include running costs
  • capital items that are more than £15,000 in total
  • contingency or unspecified costs
  • fundraising costs
