Lunch is saved

04 September 2014

For older people living in Toothill, Swindon, the lunch club at the Community Café is an important part of their social lives, but for Betty and many other members of the Lunch Club, it was proving increasingly difficult to get to.

Thanks to funding of £10,700 from People’s Health Trust, using money raised by HealthTotal through The Health Lottery, Toothill Lunch Club can now offer transport to elderly residents, allowing them to get out and socialise and build stronger links in their community.

"Since my mobility problems got worse, I thought I would not be able to go to the lunch club anymore. But to my surprise, a mini bus was able to pick me up, so I could still meet my friends in a safe and kind environment.

"Having the bus has made a wonderful difference, otherwise I could never come here, and I absolutely love it."

Betty and her friends also run their own weekly raffle at the café, for which they each bring prizes, and regularly play bingo and hold ‘tea dances’ after their lunch.

As well as providing a place for older people from the area to meet and socialise, Toothill Lunch Club also helps local people learn new skills and gain valuable work experience. Local people from Toothill volunteer to help at the lunch club, and have the chance to learn new skills in catering, from taking orders, cooking and budgeting, to obtaining Food Hygiene Certificates and the opportunity for further study at their local college.
