TCV - Local People in York

"Part of my role is to help people build relationships in the community and it's the part that I love the most."

“Most people think of York as a well-off city with a rich heritage and a busy tourist trade but the Tang Hall and Guildhall area of York is an area which experiences significant disadvantage.

“One of the great things about the area though is that there are so many people who really want to get stuck in with community projects.

“Over the next two years, people in Tang Hall and Guildhall are being supported by TCV to be part of a Local People programme. This empowers local people to engage in agenda setting, reframe problems and come up with solutions that are genuinely important to the community.

“The funding will be shared between a number of local groups and organisations so that local people can address issues in the area which are most important to them.

“What’s great about the Local People programme is that the community is really at the heart of it. The collective wisdom and experience of residents is central to the development of this project.

“It’s about getting out there and getting to know people and letting them know about the project. As word is spreading you can feel a real sense of excitement building, there’s plenty in the pipeline.

“Social isolation is a theme that keeps popping up and so one of the things we’re looking at is events to get the whole community together.

“One event we held was a lantern walk where residents came to the community hall, made lanterns and dressed up and then walked together around Tang Hall.

“Afterwards everyone came back to the hall for storytelling and enjoyed a chat over some soup and cake.

“To see so many happy faces was amazing and it just shows what the community can achieve when we work together.

“It’s the passion and enthusiasm of residents that will be key to creating lasting change and I feel lucky to be part of it.”
