Charity in Cwmgors receives almost £10,000 to support older, isolated people

28 January 2013

A charity in Cwmgors has received funding of almost £10,000 from People’s Health Trust, using money raised by HealthExpect through The Health Lottery.

The funding will enable Cwmgors Community Centre to set up and run a lunch club for isolated older people and provide accessible transport for people living in the Upper Amman Valley that would not otherwise be able to attend.

By bringing people together to share a meal, the project encourages people to make friends and support one another, aiming to reduce social isolation and helping members to feel more connected with their local community.

Lynda Williams, Committee Member – Cwmgors Community Centre Management Committee, said: “We are delighted to receive this funding from People’s Health Trust that has enabled us to support more isolated older people from the local area.

“The project was set up following consultation with older people in the area, many of whom live alone. They told us that the biggest problem affecting their health was loneliness and isolation. Now, thanks to this new funding, we can support them to feel part of the community again.”

Chris Lunn, Director – HealthExpect, said: “It’s great that money raised by HealthExpect is being used to support local charities like Cwmgors Community Centre Management Committee.”

So far, over half a million pounds has been raised for health good causes in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Carmarthenshire, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire and Bridgend by HealthExpect through The Health Lottery. Other charities to receive grants from People's Health Trust, so far in the region include: Alzheimer’s Society, The Conservation Volunteers, Carers Trust, WRVS, Serenity Neath Port Tablot, Seren, Vision Impaired West Glamorgan and Haul – arts in health.
