Cleethorpes MP visits project supporting older people

A resident-led project that supports older people in Cleethorpes welcomed their local MP to talk about how they are supporting the local community.

Martin Vickers, MP for Cleethorpes, attended a Mardi Gras-themed party at Cleethorpes Memorial Hall on Grimsby Road on Friday afternoon.

The event was organised by members of Grimsby & District Live at Home Scheme, who run the Home From Home Transport project.

Martin Vickers MP shows his support for a new resident-led project funded by People’s Health Trust that supports older people living in and around Cleethorpes.

During his visit, Mr Vickers had the opportunity to meet some of the women from the project and hear about all the great things they do before joining in with the music and dancing.

The Home from Home Transport project received an investment of just over £30,000 from People’s Health Trust, using money raised by HealthWin through The Health Lottery.

The new investment is being used to provide a minibus service to transport older people from the outskirts of Cleethorpes to two existing social clubs.

Mr Vickers said: “I was really pleased to be invited to see the work of Grimsby & District Live at Home Scheme and the vital service they provide.

“The project supports older people in the area with opportunities they might find difficult to access without them. It was great to see group members had made new friends and are taking part in different activities.”

Ann-Marie Tuplin, from the project, said: “Everyone seemed to have a fantastic time and we were very happy to welcome Martin Vickers MP to find out more about the project.

“There was a fun atmosphere and a great turn out. Transport can be a big barrier for people not getting out the house but when you see the smile on everyone’s face when they leave – it just makes it worthwhile.”

Previous events organised by the project include a celebration for the Queen’s 90th birthday, which was so successful it has become an annual event.
