Homegrown success

04 October 2018

A group of residents have been working to transform a plot of derelict land in the Anfield and Everton area into a new community garden and hydroponic lab. The garden will provide fresh produce for local residents.

The redevelopment has been made possible by a £45,000 grant from People’s Health Trust with money raised through The Health Lottery.

Formed in 2012, The Homebaked Community Land Trust (CLT) is co-owned and managed by local residents who endeavour to reinvigorate their neighbourhood ‘brick by brick and loaf by loaf’.

Money raised through The Health Lottery has enabled the community-led housing and enterprise scheme, HomeGrown Collective, to set up a project known as HomeFarm, which will see an old recreation ground flourish as a micro-green urban farm and communal outdoor space.

Samantha Jones, Organiser, Homebaked, said: “Receiving recognition and funding through The Health Lottery has had an incredible impact on the Homebaked team and the community it supports. We’re passionate about our community and delighted to be able to expand our project to create this community garden and opportunities for local people to come together and improve their environment.”

HomeFarm Club is breathing life back in to the community and now runs two sessions a week, bringing together dozens of volunteers who manage the lab and grow produce for local residents to enjoy. Through the project, local residents are learning new skills and creating a lasting legacy for the community.

HomeFarm Club volunteer, Patricia Levey – Bennet said: “We have been changing our local greenspace with our own hands, it is important for our community to have a beautiful environment in which to come together and we are doing this seed by seed.”

Chris Lunn, spokesperson from The Health Lottery North West said: “The funds raised through The Health Lottery in the North West are changing and improving lives. It was clear that supporting Homebaked to expand would have a great benefit to the community. To date, over £100 million has been raised through The Health Lottery for good causes across Great Britain, of which over £9 million has been raised for the North West.
