Houghton and District Boxing Club awarded funding to work with local young people

12 November 2013

Using money raised by HealthRespect through The Health Lottery, Houghton & District Fitness and Youth Boxing Club has been awarded a grant of just under £6,000 from People’s Health Trust.

The funding will enable them to deliver a 12 month project called ‘Removing the barriers’ that encourages children and young people to take up boxing and to box competitively if they choose to do so. Working with vulnerable local young people from Houghton le Spring Town and the surrounding villages of Newbottle, Fence Houses, Shiney Row and East Rainton, the project aims to remove the barriers to boxing by providing equipment, training kit and transport.

Houghton & District Fitness and Youth Boxing Club’s aims to engage those who are most vulnerable and at risk of becoming involved in antisocial or risk-related behaviour. It works to raise the self-esteem of participants so that they can strive to achieve their full potential in sport and socially.

Diane Major, Fundraiser – Houghton & District Fitness and Youth Boxing Club, said: “It’s fantastic that we have been awarded funding for our ‘Removing the barriers’ project in Houghton le Spring. It will enable us to reach children and young people that are most at risk of becoming involved in antisocial or risk-related behaviour. It is a great opportunity for them to improve their fitness and socialise.

Chris Lunn, Director – HealthRespect, said: “We are delighted that money raised by HealthRespect has been awarded by People’s Health Trust to such a fantastic project –opening up sporting opportunities for some of the most vulnerable children and young people in the local area.
