Families' artwork creates excitement at local library

04 August 2016

A creative art project for families in Newham is helping people make new friends as well as adding a touch of colour to Custom House Library.

Ingeenium has received £10,275 from People’s Health Trust, using money raised by HealthLives through The Health Lottery.

The money has been invested in Community Makery - a weekly family art group shaped around children’s books.

Members of the group help to design the sessions which involve innovative art activities and end with a story read to everyone by the older children involved in the session.

The group has also transformed the Children's Library space at Custom House Library using artwork created by members.

Jessica Boatright, Director of Ingeenium, said: “The group has been a great way for neighbours to get to know each other because people feel more comfortable chatting to each other when they are taking part in an activity.

“The group is getting bigger every week; it’s one of the best attended sessions at the library and is helping to boost attendance at other sessions.

“Community Makery really feels like a social community. The library is buzzing on a Saturday afternoon and it looks fantastic thanks to all the bright artwork made by the children.”

The group also go on outings which are decided on by members. Recently, they visited the Southbank Centre and the group have also enjoyed visits to Stratford Theatre Royal, The Crystal and the Olympic Park.

The project came about after two family art events at the library and biscuit decorating stalls which local residents took part in.

These events encouraged people to ask for more creative activities to be held locally.
