A Local Conversation in Milton Keynes

08 October 2015

People in Netherfield, Milton Keynes, are creating lasting change in their community with support from Community Action: MK.

Community Action: MK secured funding of £223,009  over the next two years from People’s Health Trust with money raised by HealthStrong through The Health Lottery.

The investment has been awarded through the Trust’s Local Conversation programme, which involves supporting residents to take control of the design, development and delivery of the local initiatives by developing a shared vision for their community.

Residents on the Netherfield estate have got involved in the project through existing events such as coffee afternoons and fun days as well as specially-planned events in the area.

A BMX stunt rider performing on the estate encouraged young people to get involved in the Local Conversation and the Woughton World Cup football tournament was an opportunity to engage with more men about the project.

This process uncovered important issues and stories detailing concerns which affect people on the estate.

A number of priorities have been identified including decreasing fly tipping, increasing the number and range of activities for young people, decreasing anti-social behaviour and improving green spaces.

So far, more than 550 residents have been involved with the Local Conversation and have openly discussed their experience of living in Netherfield and what local priorities are important to them.

A steering group has been at the heart of the engagement process and the whole community has had the opportunity to get involved as well as making sure local opinions are represented.

The group meets every Monday to discuss issues and then go out to the wider community to find solutions.

Julie Webb from Community Action MK, said: “This project has provided an opportunity and incentive for people from a broad cross section of the neighbourhood to join as one.

“The response we’ve had to the Local Conversation programme so far has been fantastic; residents have been really keen to engage with the project and are excited to be part of it.

“The community is passionate about ensuring the priorities identified are addressed in the best way possible.”

John Hume, Chief Executive of People’s Health Trust said: “It is clear that the residents in Netherfield are behind the Local Conversation and that they really value and care about their neighbourhood.

“The Local Conversation programme has galvanised the community and there is clearly a strong desire for enduring and meaningful engagement which will lead to lasting change. We’re really happy to be supporting the residents of Netherfield.”
