Local families meet for support and friendship thanks to new funding

30 May 2014

Isolated families in Dover and Aycliffe are meeting up for emotional support and friendship, thanks to funding from People’s Health Trust.

Using money raised by HealthWhole through The Health Lottery, People's Health Trust has invested £27,225 in Home-Start Dover District, where families experiencing isolation, depression, mental health issues and relationship difficulties are meeting other families in similar circumstances to support one another.

Home-Start is running weekly two-hour groups: one in Dover and one in Aycliffe, providing a stimulating and safe environment for children to play, and for families to play with their children. The groups are supporting parents, and providing a space to address issues of loneliness, isolation and mental ill-health for local families.

Tracy Perrow, Scheme Manager, said: “Aycliffe is an isolated community, and people living in both areas experience disadvantage. We provide two family groups for families who may feel isolated and unsupported, and are looking for ways to bring up their children in a positive way.

“Families come to the groups to form friendships and support networks. Once they grow in confidence they establish a social group, and with peer support, access other services in the community. Often when a family has reached a point where they no longer wish to attend the Home-Start group, they attend the Home-Start Volunteer Training in order to become a volunteer. This means they can go on to support other families themselves.”

John Hume, Chief Executive, People’s Health Trust, said: “Home-Start is a great idea which encourages local families going through a difficult time to support each other. The fact that the group is so local will mean that they can reach out to those families who are feeling particularly isolated. We couldn’t be happier to support this project.”
