Looking Out for Lydd

03 September 2015

A much-loved coffee morning and befriending scheme has received new funding from People's Health Trust - using money raised by HealthWhole through The Health Lottery.

More than £11,000 has been awarded to Looking Out for Lydd, a programme run by local people through Caring All Together on Romney Marsh (CARM) which supports socially isolated older people living in Romney Marsh and the surrounding area.

The money will be used to fund the Meeting Point - a weekly coffee morning in Lydd which provides people with a space to make new friends and feel more involved in their community.

Every week the coffee morning is attended by Community Warden Paul Croft who highlights any local issues that might affect the group as well as giving them an opportunity to raise any concerns with him.

The group often enjoy talks and day trips which they help to organise.

The Meeting Point takes place every Thursday from 10am to 12pm at the Hardy Hall in Skinner Road.

Funding will also support CARM’s befriending scheme where, for at least an hour each week, volunteers visit older isolated people living in Lydd who cannot get out and about.

CARM hopes to increase the number of older people who benefit from the befriending scheme and is looking for befriending volunteers in the Lydd area.

Helen Mattock, manager of CARM, said: “These projects are really valued within the community so we are really happy to have received funding from People’s Health Trust.

“The majority of the people who come to the Meeting Point live alone and through this coffee morning are able to mix more with other people from their community.

“Local people are really at the heart of both projects, all of our Meeting Point volunteers live in Lydd and everyone who comes along has their say on trips and speakers.”
