Young people march together in Essex

13 May 2013

Essex Marching Corps has received funding of almost £20,000 from People’s Health Trust – using money raised by HealthStrength through The Health Lottery.

The funding is being used to deliver a youth outreach and education project that provides opportunities for isolated young people to enjoy performance and music in a fun and  rewarding environment.

Hayley Meagher, Chair – Essex Marching Corps, said: “We are delighted to have received this funding from People’s Health Trust. Music is a fantastic way to bring people together. This funding is enabling us to extend our programme for young people in the area – particularly those with caring responsibilities and those which, because of family, and often financial circumstances, do not participate in any extra-curricular activities.

“It aims to improve confidence and self-esteem, and encourage companionship and peer support by by giving local, isolated young people a place to build new social links within their community by understanding the part they can play within a group that values their involvement and rewards their achievements.”

This project also hopes to develop the skills of both new and existing volunteers and to provide more opportunities for young people to perform together at community events.

The project is based in the Boyce Ward of Benfleet in Essex and also covers West Canvey Island.

So far, more than £670,000 has been raised for health good causes in Essex by HealthStrength through The Health Lottery. Other organisations to have already been awarded funding from People’s Health Trust in the area include: Achievement Through Football Southend Youth Football Club, Sustrans, Alzheimer’s Society, Young at Heart, Mencap, Scope, WRVS and The Shadyfish Experience.

Chris Lunn, Director – HealthStrength, said: “It’s great that money raised by HealthStrength is being used to support incredible local organisations Essex Marching Corps.”
