A space of their own

04 October 2017

After five years of planning and nearly a year of construction, volunteers and staff at Penparcau Community Forum have opened the doors to their new community centre.

Residents from the Local Conversation project in Penparcau organised a day of celebrations boasting stalls, face painting, hair beading, line dancing, a cooking demonstration, and a local 1960s band - The Hornettes.

Bryn Jones, Forum Coordinator, said: “It was fantastic to be able to celebrate everyone’s hard work with the launch, we have created something for the whole neighbourhood.

“We’re committed to making sure that everyone’s voice is heard – we want locals to decide how the community centre will be used.”

The centre includes a space where people can sit and enjoy coffee and cake from the café, a large open-plan flexible space for activities and events, with patio doors which open out onto the terrace.

The new community centre will be a base for the Local Conversation project in Penparcau, which supports local people to develop a shared vision for their neighbourhood and to then bring their ideas to life.

So far more than 2,500 local people have been involved in the project.

Through the Local Conversation in Penparcau, residents identified a number of priorities, including the need for more modern, fit for purpose, community facilities.

As well as the community centre, other priorities for the project include youth activities, a community minibus and website, green spaces and a garden project.

The centre was part-funded by the Welsh Government, Ceredigion County Council, Aberystwyth Town Council and People’s Health Trust.

Bryn Jones added: “The idea behind the building is one which runs through the whole project — to bring people together and we are looking forward to welcoming everyone in to enjoy the space.”

To date, People’s Health Trust has invested more than £335,000 in the overall Local Conversations project in Penparcau, using money raised by HealthExpect through The Health Lottery.
