North Devon theatre company receives grant to run dance sessions for people with learning disabilities

Using money raised by HealthContact through The Health Lottery, Many Directions Theatre Company – based in Barnstaple – has been awarded a grant of more than £8,000 from People's Health Trust to run a 12 month programme of weekly dance and movement workshops especially designed for people with learning disabilities living in North Devon.

Using money raised by HealthContact through The Health Lottery, Many Directions Theatre Company – based in Barnstaple – has been awarded a grant of more than £8,000 from People's Health Trust to run a 12 month programme of weekly dance and movement workshops especially designed for people with learning disabilities living in North Devon.

These will take place in community venues in both Barnstable and Bideford to cater for participants from across rural North Devon & Torridge, and will benefit more than 20 people with learning disabilities in each location.

The sessions will be run by Helen Venn, trained in Classical & Contemporary Dance and Grace Nicholl, a registered drama therapist and movement specialist. Both are part of the Wolf and Water Arts Company, a Devon based registered charity which specialises in working with disadvantaged and excluded communities. The project will be managed by the Many Directions Theatre Company.

Peter Harris, Director – Many Directions Theatre Company, said: “We are delighted to receive support from the Healthy Communities small grants programme. It will give us the chance to set up and run two dance groups which are especially tailored to the needs of people with learning disabilities across North Devon. This will not only be healthy and educational, but lots of fun too!"

Donald Macrae, Director – HealthContact, said: “This fantastic project aims to improve the overall health and well-being of people with learning disabilities in North Devon through the delivery of a specially-devised dance and movement workshops that explore a range of themes including emotions, rights to independence, choice, inclusion, safety, bullying, friendships, eating properly and keeping fit.” 

So far, over half a million pounds has been raised for health good causes in Devon and Torbay by HealthContact through The Health Lottery. Other organisations that have been already awarded funding in the area include: Organic Arts, School Food Trust, Sustrans Active Travel Champions and Home Start Torbay.
