Northgate Takes Off

03 May 2017

“We don’t like to focus on the negatives of a person’s life. We don’t like to focus on what they can’t do, we focus on what they can do – and help them to do it. Our story is one of hope and recovery.”

In this short film, we hear about how investment from the Trust is helping people with mental health problems in Canterbury, Kent to live a happy and successful life.

The Northgate Group is a project for residents living in Northgate in Canterbury. It’s a peer-support group for people with mental health problems, set up and run by its members for its members.

The group applied for investment from the Trust through its Active Communities programme.

Active Communities projects aim to develop social links and ties and support residents to discuss and act on things that are important to them.

Sometimes members will talk about difficulties they are experiencing, but often they just have a chat. It’s a place for people to have fun and enjoy themselves.

At the end of last year, the group worked with students from the local university, to make a film about the project, and the impact it’s having on its members.

Here’s their film.

People’s Health Trust has invested £49,990 in The Take Off Project, using money raised by HealthWhole through The Health Lottery.
