Residents decide

08 June 2017

Five community groups in Holyhead have received new funding worth a total of £5,000 at a Community Chest event this week.

The Community Chest is a small grants programme organised by residents as part of the Local Conversation in Holyhead – funded by People’s Health Trust using money raised by HealthDiverse through The Health Lottery.

The successful applicants were: Plas Road Allotment Association, Kid’z’Ink, Parents and Friends of Clwb Cybi, Gwelfor Majorettes and Holyhead Autumn Activities CIC.

The groups submitted applications for funding of up to £1,000 towards activities and development to the resident-led panel.

When the Community Chest Fund was launched this year, there was overwhelming support from the community. Local Holyhead groups and organisations quickly submitted applications to the fund, outlining their proposals and stories.

A flurry of activity and excitement amongst committee members soon occurred as a huge number of applications were received. The committee consists of community representatives; funding for the community decided by the community.

Unfortunately not every bid was successful, however there was strong support for all and there was a definite sense of need amongst the community for funding.

Fostering a greater sense of community spirit and encouraging positive wellbeing was the driving force behind many of the organisations’ applications.

An event was held at Mon CF’s youth centre, The Pod, to award groups and organisations their cheques.

Over the next few months, we’ll be following their journeys and telling their stories of how the investment has benefited them.

Local Conversations is a flexible, resident-led funding model driven by what local people want. Through the programme, residents are supported to identify and take action on issues that are important to them.
Applications will open shortly for the next round of Mon CF’s Community Chest Fund. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for further details, or contact Dan Millington – Local Conversations Officer – on 01407 762 004.
