A space for everyone

04 August 2015

The iconic Red Tower in York will be transformed into a community space and café for everybody to enjoy by local group Your Red Tower.

The York-based community group will be supported by The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) which has been given funding by People’s Health Trust using money raised by HealthLevel through The Health Lottery to launch its Local People Programme – an initiative which encourages people to come together and take the lead in transforming their community.

The programme is a unique opportunity for people in York to genuinely take control of local initiatives by relying on the wisdom, experiences and skills of local people and supports them to make changes they want for their community.

People's Health Trust has invested £130,000 in York and TCV York will share this funding between a number of local groups including Your Red Tower which is the first organisation to receive a grant.

Your Red Tower has been given £452 by TCV York which they are using to pay for the set up costs of the community café which the local community and visitors alike can enjoy.

As part of the initiative, volunteers will be opening the doors of the Red Tower to visitors every Saturday morning from 11am to 1pm where tea and coffee will be available.

Over time, Your Red Tower hopes to return the landmark into a fully functional; cafe and community space.

TCV Project Officer Stephen Collins said:

“The once unused Red Tower in York is now a community space for everyone to enjoy, and TCV is really pleased to have aided this transformation thanks to funding from People’s Health Trust.

“It is very obvious that the Your Red Tower group had a lot of passion and enthusiasm for the venture and I am lucky to have been able to join the group on occasions as part of the TCV Local People programme – their work is really worthwhile and benefits the entire community.

"TCV aims to develop their support to the community of Tang Hall and Guildhall areas of York and are keen to hear ideas from people living in those areas."
