Spon End inspired

09 August 2018

Residents in Spon End are working to improve the local environment, including trialling new lighting to improve a local subway.

As part of the community action day in Coventry, local people came along to express their opinions and views on how they could improve the local environment, including on improving local subways.

Over the last 12 months, the Local People project in Coventry has held a number of ‘pop up’ engagement events to find out the views of people who live in the area. At these sessions, residents have discussed ideas to make where they live even better and created a shared vision.

Through the Local People project, residents use local wisdom to develop a shared vision for their community so they can take control of the design, development and delivery of local change. The aim is to address health inequalities by ensuring that control is in the hands of local residents.

As part of the project, residents wanted to improve the local environment to make where they live even better. The Spon Street subway was one of the locations identified through this process and residents have come up with ideas to improve it.

The project is supported by Sustrans and funded by People’s Health Trust with money raised through The Health Lottery.

One of the project officers, Chloe Booth, said: “This is a really exciting project and we are so glad so many stopped by to express their opinions.

“It was a really exciting trial of the coloured lighting in the subway and local people shared their own subway ‘make-over’ ideas.

“We want to raise the profile of the work we’re doing with the subway because we understand that urban environments can have a huge impact on people’s health and wellbeing.

“Neighbourhoods that are pleasant, safe and sociable are often the happiest and healthiest places to live and work.”

The project is open to anyone who lives in Spon End. To get involved, please visit: www.facebook.com/LocalPeopleSponEnd
