Community garden will blossom thanks to funding from People’s Health Trust

17 June 2016

Residents of all ages have the chance to try out their green-fingered skills through a new community garden project in Farnham, Surrey.

Sandy Hill Community Bungalow has received £10,000 from People’s Health Trust, using money raised by HealthSound through The Health Lottery.

Through the project, Get Growing @ the Bungalow, people living in Upper Hale, Farnham, will create a community garden, grow produce and take part in cookery classes.

Over the next two years, residents will design, create and maintain the garden through regular meetups.

The project aims to help people to learn new skills, try new activities, get to know their neighbours, enhance the look of the local area and improve the sense of community.

Cathy Burroughs, Sandy Hill Community Bungalow’s Centre Manager, said: “Local people are really at the heart of this project. Residents who were interested in setting up the project started a working group and we’ve had open meetings so anyone who wants to get involved can come and share their ideas.

“The garden is just outside the community centre and we hope that, by being involved in this project, more people start using it and make it their own.”

Residents involved in the project will meet every week and will have the opportunity to share their experience and knowledge with other local people.

Notes to editors

People living in the poorest neighbourhoods in Britain die, on average, seven years younger than people living in the richest neighbourhoods. What’s more, they will spend 17 years more of their shortened lives with an extra disability and have a lower quality of life. We believe that where people live should not unfairly reduce the length or the quality of their lives.
