Diane Abbott MP visits Hackney Playbus

19 December 2017

Families were joined by the Shadow Home Secretary in celebrating their last session of the year at the Hackney Playbus.

The fun-filled morning, in Springfield Park, for under-fives and their parents or carers included arts and crafts, face painting and a live band.

During her visit, Diane Abbott, MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, had a tour of the brightly painted double-decker bus which has been fully-converted for early years play.

Ms Abbott took the opportunity to talk to parents and volunteers involved with the project and she praised the work of Hackney Playbus, who deliver play activities for under-fives, accompanied by parents/carers.

She said: “The Playbus is one of the most loved children’s services in Hackney. It provides children with the opportunity for messy, open-air play and brings families together. I am very happy to support it.”

The project is funded by People’s Health Trust with money raised by HealthPromote through The Health Lottery.

The project aims to reach children and parents or carers who do not currently access early year’s services and works to promote a culture of diversity, to build a sense of community, belonging and friendship.

Claire Lindsay, the Playbus Project Manager, said: “We were very happy to welcome Diane Abbott to one of our sessions. Our fun packed bus is a regular sight in Hackney parks and estates and we offer creative and safe play opportunities to young children, through which they can develop confidence and skills.

“It is also an important support for parents, who can come for a chat or be directed to services they need to access.

“We are very grateful to People’s Health Trust for their funding, which has supported us to bring local families together and to feel more connected with their local environment.”

David Jones, Director of Grant Programmes at People’s Health Trust, said: “The Playbus is a really valued resource for children and their parents or carers. The Playbus team have great local knowledge, and it is clear that both the children and their families are building lasting friendships beyond this project.”

Notes to editor

Hackney Playbus is a small charity dedicated to bringing play opportunities and support to families who need it most. It runs a variety of services for families with children under five across several East London boroughs.

People’s Health Trust is an independent charity addressing health inequalities across Great Britain. It works closely with each Community Interest Company distributing grants. www.peopleshealthtrust.org.uk

People living in the poorest neighbourhoods in Britain die, on average, seven years younger than people living in the richest neighbourhoods. What’s more, they will spend 17 years more of their shortened lives with an extra disability and have a lower quality of life. We believe that where people live should not unfairly reduce the length or the quality of their lives.

HealthPromote is a Community Interest Company committed to raising money to address health inequalities in Islington, Haringey, Enfield, City of London, Tower Hamlets and Hackney. www.healthpromote.org.uk

The Health Lottery is operated for and on behalf of 51 Community Interest Companies across England, Scotland and Wales, all holding society lottery licenses issued by the Gambling Commission. www.healthlottery.co.uk
