Health Lottery South East Enables Expansion of Winchester’s Award Winning Blue Apple Theatre

15 August 2018

Hampshire is celebrating the expansion of award winning Winchester’s Blue Apple Theatre Group. The expansion has been made possible via a £49,615 grant from People’s Health Trust with money raised through The Health Lottery.

Blue Apple Theatre provides a platform for people with a learning disability to excel within the arts sector. Through the production of high quality theatre, dance and film productions, the group supports members to enhance their social, personal and artistic skills and achieve public recognition for their talents.

Founded in Winchester, Blue Apple Theatre’s incredible success in recent years has meant it has had long waiting lists. Thanks to money raised through The Heath Lottery, they have been able to hire more venues, hire skilled group facilitators and qualified carers, enabling the theatre group to expand its programme to establish 11 new groups to make a total of 15 weekly sessions running throughout Hampshire.

Simon Morris, General Manager, Blue Apple Theatre, said: “Receiving recognition and funding through The Health Lottery has had an incredible impact on Blue Apple Theatre’s members and organisers alike.  We’re passionate about raising the ceiling of expectation for people with a learning disability and the grant has meant that we can continue to support even more talented people with learning disabilities and help them to excel within the arts.”

Project member, Sam Dace, said: “It’s been quite the adventure, it’s led me a long way. It’s been cool. It’s given me more opportunities to show off my skills. Fantastic.”

Chris Lunn, The Health Lottery in the South East spokesperson, said: “The funds raised through The Health Lottery in the south east are changing and improving lives.  It was clear that supporting Blue Apple Theatre to grow would have a great benefit to the community. To date, over £100 million has been raised through The Health Lottery for good causes across Great Britain, of which over £10 million has been raised for the south east. We hope to make even more for good causes when Health Lottery South East opens on the 29th July.”

Health Lottery South East is benefitting from Health Lottery tickets sold for all draws being held between 29 July and 31 August 2018. You can buy Health Lottery tickets in advance for these draws online at www.healthlottery.co.uk or from more than 32,000 local retailers including the Post Office, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, ASDA, Morrisons and WH Smith. About The Health Lottery

The Health Lottery is an independent British lottery scheme with a difference. It manages multiple lotteries which operate under the banner of The Health Lottery. Each lottery is licensed by the Gambling Commission and represents a different region of Great Britain.

We are now consolidating these lotteries on a regional basis. The first regional lottery “Health Lottery South East” will take place between 29 July to 31 August 2018. These 12 regional lotteries will operate in a rotation, meaning that every area in England, Scotland and Wales gets a share of the funds raised. All are run for one specific purpose: Tackling health inequalities in their respective areas. By supporting local health causes, The Health Lottery is making a real difference every week to thousands of people across Great Britain. Over £100 million has been raised by society lotteries through The Health Lottery.
