Local Conversation in Penparcau underway

03 June 2015

Residents of Penparcau in Aberstwyth, West Wales, are proving how local people can lead powerful change in a community. Penparcau Community Forum is holding a ‘Local Conversation’ in the area – a neighbourhood-led programme developed by People’s Health Trust, which supports local people to develop a shared vision for their neighbourhood and which gives them access to money to make it a reality.

The local residents spent time identifying the common concerns that affected them and together they have started to take action locally to make their neighbourhood an even better place to live. Now seven months into the process, they are starting to see some great examples of local action within the area and are reaping the benefits of a closer knit community.

A monthly neighbourhood steering group has started up, to ensure that all activity comes from across the community. Also the history and heritage group now meets regularly and has developed a real sense of identity and place. There is also a Youth Forum, which is run entirely by young residents and allows them to take action which is geared towards the young people living in the area. They were recently given control over a grant to distribute to local youth projects and after holding interviews and assessing applications, awarded the money to various groups they felt were supporting young people’s needs.

The sense of community spirit is evident in the neighbourhood – residents have taken control of the planters in the local area and have also transformed a derelict space into a memorial garden.

Bryn Jones, Penparcau Community Forum Co-Ordinator said:

“Being part of this Local Conversation has excited, inspired and mobilised our community like never before. We are especially amazed by the hunger and commitment of local people to be involved in our Local Conversation.

“The neighbourhood is made up of good people who want to make a difference to their community, and our Local Conversation is seen by many as a way to make change happen. We know that real change takes time… and the people of Penparcau are ready.”
