Local people celebrate 10 years of Riverside Community Garden

02 October 2014

Local people in Riverside, Cardiff, got together for a harvest feast to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their incredible community space, which has brought hundreds of people together to share not just gardening tips, but real life experiences, friendship and support.

Thanks to funding of £25,000 from People’s HealthTrust, using money raised by HealthControl through The Health Lottery, Riverside Community Garden is continuing to help more local people of all ages to stay connected, as well as learning how to grow and cook fresh produce, and share their skills.

Sam Holt, Garden Manager, said: “Riverside Community Garden has become a vital part of the local community, and means many things to many different people: it could be a place to learn how to grow your own vegetables to use in meals at home, or it could be a place to simply come and have a chat over a cup of tea.

“Over the years we have seen the garden transform the lives of those that use it. People arrive with low confidence and little knowledge of growing fresh produce, and leave with new friends, useful skills, and a feeling of connectedness to the local community. We have helped 22 new residents experience community growing and cooking, and reached out to hundreds more through our community outreach program, including the Spring Planting day, Apple Day and Riverside Festival.”

Eva Elliot, Trustee for Wales, People’s Health Trust, said: “Working locally, I have visited Riverside Community Garden a number of times, and each time I visit I’m so impressed by the feeling of community here. Local people have turned this garden into an incredibly versatile space, where skills are shared and friends are made. Here’s to another 10 years.”
