A Sweet Meet - Older people from Arboretum Park share a lunch with Derby Mayor

02 April 2014

Older people from Arboretum Park, Derby, invited the local Mayor to ‘Sweet Meet’, their community and lunch club, which has recently received investment of £47,069 from People’s Heath Trust - using money raised by HealthCalm through the Health Lottery.

Older people living in the Arboretum Park area are gathering every week at ‘Sweet Meet’ – a community and lunch club at local day centre Sahahra. Making new friends, catching up on local news, and taking part in activities chosen by them are just some of the things on the menu at the centre.

Nick Gregory, Chair, Sahahra Day Centre, said: “It is so important for people to feel part of the community, and to get to know their neighbours. There aren’t many things available in the area for older people, so for them to come to the centre every week, share a meal with their community, and take part in activities chosen by them, really is fantastic.”

Councillor Fareed Hussain, Mayor of the City of Derby, said: “It’s always good to see groups like this coming together in our area, and thanks to the funding from People’s Health Trust, older people from Arboretum Park are making stronger ties with their neighbours, strengthening their community, and sharing some great food!”

John Hume, Chief Executive, People’s Health Trust, said: “Sahahra’s Sweet Meet is a fantastic idea that we’re delighted to be able to support. This funding means that older people have somewhere to go each week, where they can catch up on the local gossip, share a meal, and meet with old and new friends.”
