Stratford amateur photographer has image showcased at the House of Commons

18 October 2016

A resident from Stratford, London, had a photo they had taken showcased at the House of Commons after winning a national competition.

People’s Health Trust launched the competition as part of its fifth anniversary celebrations and to mark the launch of its Instagram account.

Alex Oma-Pius’s entry was one of 20 photos chosen by an independent panel of judges to be displayed at the Trust’s five-year anniversary event at the House of Commons.

The competition was open to anyone who is, or has been, involved in a project funded by the Trust.

Alex is Artistic Director at IROKO Theatre Company, which received £39,105 from People’s Health Trust, using money raised by HealthLives through The Health Lottery.

Funding was used to set up Friendly Circle, an intergenerational music project for men living on Carpenter’s Estate.

Alex Oma-Pius said: “It was brilliant to be named one of the 20 winners of People’s Health Trust’s photo competition.

“Thanks to funding from the Trust, men on the estate are coming together to make music and build new friendships.”

In the last five years, over £80million has been raised by 51 society lotteries, through The Health Lottery. Over 2,300 projects have been supported, helping more than 400,000 people across Great Britain.

The Trust believes that giving local communities greater control over what happens in their neighbourhood is key to creating new and stronger relationships, improving confidence and a greater sense of belonging.

People’s Health Trust Chief Executive, John Hume, said: “Well done to all of our winners; their photos really capture what is at the heart of their projects.

“We are delighted with the response to our competition. It has been a fantastic way to mark the launch of our Instagram account and help us to celebrate our fifth anniversary.”

People's Health Trust is an independent charity investing in local communities to help create a society without health inequalities. It works closely with each Community Interest Company, distributing grants. www.peopleshealthtrust.org.uk

People living in the poorest neighbourhoods in Britain die, on average, seven years younger than people living in the richest neighbourhoods. What’s more, they will spend 17 years more of their shortened lives with an extra disability and have a lower quality of life. We believe that where people live should not unfairly reduce the length or the quality of their lives.

HealthLives is a Community Interest Company committed to raising money to address health inequalities in Havering, Barking and Dagenham, Redbridge, Newham and Waltham Forest. www.HealthLivescic.co.uk
