A Local Conversation in Holyhead

06 January 2016

Local residents in Holyhead are having their voices heard as they get involved in an innovative project to make their town a better place to live.

Cymunedau’n Gyntaf Mon Communities First (Mon CF) has secured funding of £214,980 over two years from People’s Health Trust - with money raised by HealthDiverse through The Health Lottery.

The investment has been awarded through the Local Conversations programme – a People’s Health Trust initiative which involves supporting residents to develop a shared vision for their community and take local action on issues that matter to them.

So far, more than 1,500 residents have been involved in the ongoing engagement process through questionnaires, fun days and social media.

Together they have decided on their neighbourhood priorities including improving youth facilities and ensuring local people are trained and job ready when recruitment opportunities arise in the area.

One such idea to come out of the engagement process was a youth café after young people said there was a need for activities in the area for them to take part in.

This is now in the process of being established and will be designed and run by young people under the supervision of youth workers.

Rita Lyon, Cluster Manager at Mon CF, said: “There is a great sense of community spirit here and people love living in such a neighbourly and welcoming town.

“Local people are keen to get stuck in and make Holyhead even better through the Local Conversation.”

David Jones, Director of Grant Programmes at People’s Health Trust, said: “Local people’s voices are very much at the heart of this project and their views are being clearly integrated into shaping the local priorities.”
